Turkey spikes for silver medal after final defeat
Turkey had to resolve with the silver medal after losing to Serbia in the 2011 CEV Women’s Volleyball European League on Saturday.
Serbia claimed its third consecutive European In cahoots with crown by beating the host of Turkey 3-0 (25-17, 25-21, 25-23) in the final match held at the Burhan Felek Sports Lobby in Istanbul.
The group mentored by head coach Zoran Terzic completed its impeccable run in this year’s CEV Volleyball European Fellowship by re-asserting its rule also in the final four where the girls from Belgrade did not lose any set in their two matches.
Turkey played at a notable level, anchored by an effective Neriman Özsoy, who duplicated her efforts and success in fall and in block. However, the outstanding collective performance of the Serbians, with opposite Jovana Brakocevic and spiker Natasha Krsmanovic as their biggest references, offered the required edge to overwhelm their opponents.
A sensational start of Serbia and a difficult beginning for the locals contributed to a clear 25-17 in the first set. Turkey came from behind in the second period and dominated the set throughout, but a marked finalization of the visiting squad and the spectacular performance of MVP, Jovana Brakocevic, resulted in the 25-21 that started the set of the Turkish team. The local players, supported by some 5000 spectators that had got together at the Burhan Felek Volleyball Theatre tried to avoid the defeat and put additional pressure on their opponents.
