Softball pros host clinic for girls
MARION - Bats, gloves and batting helmets littered the Lease One Stadium turf Friday morning as nearly 140 girls from Southern Illinois practised the nuances of softball from the NPF Diamonds.
The three-hour clinic is an integral part of the National Pro Fastpitch visit to Southern Illinois this weekend.
"The the better of places we go we do a camp or a clinic," said Tim Kiernan, coach of the NPF Diamonds. "It's all ages, up to high boarding-school. We have some that are 15 to 18."
The clinic is a win-win situation. It allows aspiring young players to work with some of the best softball players in the to the max, and it introduces the NPF to a young audience.
"Exposure," Kiernan said. "Exposure to the game, exposure to the NPF and our players, and also to relay skills that our players have to the younger players."
Campers were split into contrasting age groups and traveled from station to station, working on hitting, running, throwing and fielding. However, there is more to softball than what happens on the common.
