Sportstyme offers wide variety of activities
Inexperienced campers at the Sportstyme summer camp get their hands on just about every type of ball, bat, racquet, stick, baton and bow during weekly sessions at Independence Middle School. And once a week, the 5- to 13-year-old campers even get soaked growing down a water slide.
In its ninth summer, the Christian-based summer sports camp's being is up 30 percent this year, said camp director Dan Sturgis, who has been with the camp since it started.
The week of the July 4, which was a day compendious, drew about 70, the lowest turnout of the summer, but most weeks are drawing 90 campers, many who pay attention to two or more weeks, Sturgis said.
"We have some kids that have come every summer for four years, every day," he said.
Camp counselors group college students and area teachers, who are off for the summer.
The indoor and outdoor facilities at IMS give the camp a venue for every endeavour and even latitude to shift operations if rain threatens outdoor play.
