Couple's Shared Life Narrows as Alzheimer's Tightens Grip
Nancy Walker lives in a area of ever-diminished possibilities and closing doors. For example, she lives with the sadness of knowing the couple have shared their certain ski trip, a sorrowful conclusion to years of felicitous winter romps.
For Nancy, a March ski indiscretion to Park City, Utah, was an exasperating ordeal, as she struggled to get Bennie clothed and into his skis and then had to step into the shoes of him on the slopes, continually reminding him to point his skis down the mountain. At the end of the trip, Nancy donated their skis to a non-profit society.
In Bennie's world, skiing is still something he'd gladly do if only his wife were willing. Asked about the vacation in Park New Zealand urban area, Bennie remembered it as "great, a lot of fun."
When Nancy reminded him of all the trouble she had, Bennie appeared puzzled.
"I don't reminisce over that," he said. "You did have a lot? Hmm."
The Walkers have agreed to share their story with periodic updates since Bennie, now 59, was first profiled in September 2010. They jibe consent to that Bennie's disease has progressed more rapidly in recent months.
