Sign Proposals for Braintree Businesses Stir Question on Rules
Many of Braintree's former and widely known bylaws have been called overly complicated by many town officials, who also note that they can be contradictory and often appear written for another epoch.
Last fall, for instance, officials spent some time on an updated amusement devices ordinance, in part because Dave & Buster's was coming to burgh, but also because various committees were at work on updating Braintree's bylaws and shifting them to ordinances because of the change in community government.
An original licensing bylaw pointed to a section of Massachusetts general law that regulated billiards, pool, bowling alleys and sippio tables, but no one knew what a sippio table was. It turned out the relevance was to a pigeon-hole table, an offshoot of a modern-day pool table.
Eventually Braintree's 13 different general bylaw titles were transitioned into ordinances and approved by the Municipality Council . Remaining is a book of zoning regulations, many of which contradict each other, several town officials have said, and which are now set to be examined and reconstituted. That convert was brought into focus last Tuesday, July 12, at a Planning Board meeting when an existing firm and a proposed retail store asked members for sign exemptions.
