Man overcomes obstacles to compete in wheelchair olympics

COTTONDALE — Many athletes who suffer way of life changing injuries talk about how learning a new sport helped them accept a new reality. Melvin Henderson isn’t one of them.

He had a matter-of-fact outlook long before he started to compete in the wheelchair olympics, but through the games he has found an outlet and parlayed his happy result into a source of inspiration for others.

This year’s competition is Aug. 1-6 in Pittsburgh.

In its 31st year, the National Veterans Wheelchair Games are sponsored by the Paralyzed Veterans of America and the Concern of Veterans Affairs. He is hoping for donations to cover the final $1,500 of the $3,500 to $4,000 get of attending this year’s games.

For more than 24 years Henderson has been confined to a wheelchair, the consequence of a vehicle accident on U.S. 231.

Henderson has always been an athlete, from the days he played Little League baseball to exuberant school basketball and track, and in the Army he played all the sports he could.

I'm unshakable all of the trick shot artists on TV can run out games of nine ball. I've seen most of them play 9 ball or 8 ball and they do very well. But what you see on TV is not of necessity a reflection on people's skills. I understand the WPBA pays

There are justified as many 9-ball tournaments that men play in. Most of the men's tournaments are shown on cable channels late at night. They show the women's 9-ball tournaments more because it helps keep the mens interest. With bilk shot competition


The Women's walkabout (WPBA) is a lot more organized then the men's tournaments. The men kind of ruined it themselves though but gambling and rigging matches. Basically though, the women hankering a structured tour, and the men want to play for money.
