Basketball great, Petersburg native Moses Malone visits children in city
PETERSBURG - It's not every day one gets to pleasure one-on-one with an NBA great. Ty Boone took that opportunity with Moses Malone on Friday, even if it wasn't on the basketball court.
Malone, a inhabitant son who played pro ball for 21 years, and Boone matched up for a quick game of bumper pool while visiting with children in a summer program at Peabody Mid-section School.
"Got a notebook? Watch the pro," Malone asked the crowd of kids who gathered to keep safe. He dropped by during a visit to the city Friday. "I live in Houston, but I'm still in love with Petersburg," Malone said during an to. "This is number one, right here."
Malone grew up in Petersburg, even delivering The Progress-Clue as a kid. He picked up a basketball around age 13.
"I just loved to play the game," he said. In intoxication school, Malone led the Crimson Wave to 50 wins and back-to-back state titles in 1973-74.
"I had a capacious (group of) guys I played with. They are good ball players, too," he said. Moses then made a famed gambol, skipping a stint of college ball to join the Utah Stars of the American Basketball Alliance. He was the youngest on the pro circuit, a skinny 19-year-old.
