This season's outlook grim on the state of Illinois college basketball ESPN

Back in 1985, the have of Illinois was at its peak in college basketball.

With Lou Henson coaching at Illinois, Joey Meyer at DePaul, Gene Sullivan at Loyola and Bob Donewald at Illinois Federal, the state placed four teams in the NCAA Tournament, the most in Illinois history.

From 1969-1975, the state was at its lowest. Not a isolated program from Illinois reached the NCAA Tournament during that time.

In recent history, the state has had a representative every year other than 1999 and 2008.

There have been eulogistic times, and there have been bad ones. Mostly, Illinois has fluctuated somewhere in between. Over the past 25 years, the state has been shut out twice, placed one side once (Illinois in 2009), two teams 16 times, three teams five times and four teams once.

So where is the state headed in 2010?

Heed this one of those down seasons. There is a slight possibility that two teams make the NCAA Tournament, but the state could also be shut out.

what was the deal with bruce pearl and the recruiting scandal while at illinois?

i heard something about him giving a tape recording he recorded that got another school in trouble with the ncaa. if this is true (which it was national sports source who said it, but im not unfailing if i heard pearl's role in the situation), then Tennessee would have 2 coaches that are snitches in the 2 big sports!!

Fulmer snitched out alabama and fulmer runs the dirtiest program in the state! (any denying that is ignorant at best, they have lead the nation in arrests for almost 10 years). how can you snitch on another program when you have the most illegal program in the country??

dont get me wrong, i love pearl and im die hard for tennessee basketball, but what a coincidence if this is geographically come to pass about pearl. i guess all is fair when it comes to recruiting and the competition then all is fair. i somewhat disagree about that though, i would keep out of other schools traffic and worry about running a clean program at my school. i do think pearl has more character than fulmer though
yeah i meant to say while at iowa...with illinois...my bad

he is a snitch though thats for firm....he had more of a right to do that then fulmer did thats for sure!
you contradicted yourself a little joey...but i see what you are saying about not getting caught. the question is, fulmer is more guilty than anyone of paying his players and running a crooked program. if it is not his fault at all, then why do his players get in 10 times more irritate than any program in the country? he needs to implement an AA program over there. and i would say it is greatly his fault for recruiting hoodlums (although u cant win without criminals). look at his players ferret out record after leaving there (leonard little, dwayne goodrich, jamal lewis, etc, etc)

fulmer is a warped snitch and not a very good coach is my point. dont snitch out another program when you run the dirtiest in the country. how could you say anything otherwise? alabama was bovine for doing that, but i still dont see how anybody can snitch that is more guilty than any other coach. he is a chicken shit. ut wont ever get rid of him, but they distress to, he sucks
i went to UT and saw first hand how this group of hoodlums is treated. EVERY single one of the good players drives a $40,000 SUV with 24 inch spinners. how did they get that? every big program pays their players, but well-founded dont snitch them out for doing something you thrive on is all im saying. most UT fans agree. hell, FSU had more trouble in the nineties (my duo), ill admit that. the fsu "criminoles" haha

Wonder, who was an asst at Iowa at the time was in a recruting battle for a 6'9 all- american by the name of Deon Thomas who went to Chicago Simeon HS. Thomas had verbally commtied to Iowa then later changed to Illinois. Gem called the kid and tape recorded their conversation asking why did he change his mind? Thomas stated that he was promised among other things a car. Cream turned in his finding to the NCAA. Jimmy collins was the asst at the time for Illinois, and is now the Head coach at Illinois-Chicago. This upset helped indirectly push Pearl to his first head coaching job at Southern Indiana. Coach Tom Davis at Iowa at the all together had to help move his long time asst on because if Pearl had stayed on staff, Iowa would have never been able to conscript the state of Illinois which had been so good to them. Collins and Pearl to this day which has been about 18yrs do not speak to each other or shake hands. When Pearl was at UWM they were in the same conference.
